Known for his granite features and brawny physique, Bronson was the archetypal screen tough guy.

Los Angeles, California - Charles Bronson, the American actor best known for his portrayal of tough guys in action films, died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 81.

Bronson’s death was caused by complications from Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia. His wife, Kim Weeks, was at his bedside.

Bronson was born Charles Dennis Buchinsky on November 3, 1921, in Ehrenfeld, Pennsylvania. He began his acting career in the early 1950s. He adopted the stage name Bronson in the mid-1950s.

Bronson’s breakthrough role came in the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven. He went on to star in a number of action films, including the “Death Wish” series. Bronson also appeared in several television movies and miniseries.

Bronson was married three times. His first two marriages ended in divorce. He married Weeks in 1998.

Bronson is survived by his wife, Kim Weeks; his daughter, Susan Bronson; his son, Jason Bronson; and his grandchildren.
